Following the San Bernardino shooting, I suspect that many Americans are fearful of becoming a victim of a terrorist attack. I also suspect that many peaceful, law-abiding Muslims in America worry that these fears may develop into anti-Muslim attitudes that could potentially lead to hate crimes committed against them.
Some have chosen to respond to the concerns of law-abiding Muslim Americans by pointing out that hate crimes are aimed at Jewish Americans far more often than Muslims in the United States. According to a report published by the FBI in 2014, Jewish Americans are the victim of hate crimes at three and a half times the rate of Muslims in the United States. Even so, what is the purpose of introducing hate crime statistics against Jewish Americans into a conversation about hate crimes against Muslim Americans? Perhaps the point is to suggest that the more people within a group affected by hate crimes, the more time and energy should be devoted to discussing it. However, if that is true, then every discussion of hate crimes in America should primarily be focused on black people.
In 2014, the FBI reported that blacks make up the largest percentage of victims of single-bias hate crimes in America. Gay men make up the second-largest group. Surely hate crimes against these groups are worthy of attention, too. Why limit the comparison to Jewish Americans? My intention here is not to change the subject from Jewish American victims to black American victims; rather, it is to point out the uselessness of doing so. I doubt that turning attention away from a legitimate problem by bringing up a separate legitimate problem will lead to a solution to either. If law-abiding Muslim Americans are being harassed, threatened, or discriminated against, then I would argue that a just society ought to address these crimes directly.
